Student Life

Student Life, Formation, and Community

Student life at Saint Mary Theological College is centered on Orthodox spiritual formation—prayer, worship, disciplined study, and service in the life of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

Spiritual Formation

Orthodox theological study is inseparable from Orthodox life. Students are formed through worship, prayer, spiritual discipline, and obedience to the Tradition of the Church. The goal of formation is humility, purity of life, and faithful service—not merely academic achievement.

  • Participation in the liturgical life of the Church whenever possible
  • Prayer rule and spiritual discipline (as guided by clergy and instructors)
  • Fasting discipline according to Orthodox practice
  • Service in parish and community ministries

Student Expectations

Students are expected to maintain reverence, discipline, and conduct consistent with Orthodox Christian life. This includes:

  • Respect for clergy, instructors, and fellow students
  • Academic integrity and honest work
  • Modesty, humility, and appropriate Christian speech
  • Peaceful conduct, avoiding scandal and division
